Matsushita and Sony on Wednesday announced they would jointly develop a
version of the Linux operating system for digital consumer electronics
devices.
The companies said that they would study the functions and performance
needed for portable and home audio visual (AV) products, such as fast
startup times and response, and develop a Linux platform that meets those
requirements.
Sony has already adopted Linux for its Cocoon (Connected Community On
Network) series of devices, including an Internet-connected personal video
recorder (PVR). The Cocoon PVR, which is sold in Japan, runs on MontaVista
Linux, a version of the operating system for embedded devices. Sony and
Panasonic, which is owned by Matsushita, have both invested in MontaVista.
The two companies said that they would make the new source code freely
available in accordance with the General Public License (GPL) to encourage
free usage and modification of the platform.
In addition, Sony and Matsushita said they may establish a forum group based
on the results of their collaboration with supporters including IBM, NEC
Electronics, Samsung, Philips, Hitachi and Sharp.
