-------------- next part --------------
really big event, many parallel sessions (at least 6 at any time!); topics
ranging from user apps, to distros, databases; definately worth visiting (and
it's free!)
presence from fedora, debian, freebsd, opensuse, mozilla, gnome, kde, ...
netconf: proposal to replace the ifup/ifdown scripts in debian with a
lightweight event-based, stateless daemon
a proposal for replacing the sysv-style init scripts in debian with a system
(port from suse) that explicitly states dependencies; to be used to fix
dependency violations (by looking at the dependecy graph), detect cyclic
dependencies, and hopefully speedup bootup; also the current sysv init system
calls shutdown scripts in the wrong order
dstat: really cool, extensible and configurable system monitoring utility,
written in python
transifex, from the usual suspect
key signing session: a bit too geeky and tiring (200 participants!) but
nevertheless useful and fun to get a chance to chat to many other people (and
meet people you've only knew from mailing lists!)
lots of booths
a quick hack for finding out where along the device subsystem stack events are
not processed (kernel -> udev/network manager; hal/apps)
accessibility issues; introduction of classes of disability (blind,
eye-sighted, one-handed, finger-handed, eye-handed (ie, no hands), deaf);
demos for eye-sighted users; braille devices are freaking expensive (>1000 EUR
up to 10K and he said that they never get any cheaper!); gnome/kde4 are mostly
accessible (kde3 isn't); most console apps are accessible;
talk on the packages.debian.org website; at the moment a one-man show; needs
help for efficient full-text indexing
talk on the release plan of lenny (the next stable version of debian); current
estimate is for sept 2008; there's a categorised list of release-critical (RC)
bugs in release.debian.org/???/lenny; some low hanging fruit there (eg,
convert changelogs to UTF; fix include/import errors in C/C++/python apps)
embedded version of debian: striped down debs (tdebs) without docs, and having
only the appropriate mo file (compiled po file) for the target locale (normal
debs have the po files for all available translations)
indywiki, a pyqt app for visually browsing wikipedia
