Well, at leat one of the reasons. Just seen on a trashware list:

Impressive, isn't it? Anything done to reduce that mountain of junk is
good.

Incidentally, one thing I have thought while looking at those pictures
is "hmmm, most of the computers still in that garbage are probably 6/7
years old top, older ones are dust by now, way beyond any
software-based recovery"

In other words, what makes the bigger difference? Extending the life
of the millions 4/5/6 years old (**) computers which may join that
pile next year if nothing is done, or that of the way smaller number
of older machines which haven't been already dumped?

Hmmm... still mulling it over. Your thoughts are welcome

(**) where, of course, 4/5/6 years is a shifting measure, meant to say
"focus in every moment on what is ~5 years old in that moment: if so,
today's RULE must save PCs of year ~2000, 2012 RULE those of year
~2005 etc.."
