[RULE] libc replacements

Hi everybody,

I'm new to the list. Saw your comments on linux-kernel, and while I'm no
kernel guru (yet, heh), I have some experience in low level programming,
C, C++, and have worked in the embedded space.

I also run some pretty old hardware. The oldest right now running Debian
slink with manual updates on a 486 with 32 megs of ram.

One of the places I've noticed bloat is the C library. When I compare
the libc sizes from slink to a modern Gentoo install, the size is double.
My deep suspicion is that this size affects the loading times of even
simple programs like ls.

So I've been planning to try some of the libc replacements, such as
diet-libc, to see if I can create a working system out of it. I plan to
compile a Linux From Scratch system using diet-libc, and see how far I
get before things break. All this depends on free time, so progress
has been slow.

Just thought I'd say hi, and see if anyone else has attempted a similar
feat.

Keep up the good work,
- Chris
