Και μένα μου είχε συμβεί κάτι παρόμοιο πρόσφατα όταν άλλαξα από το
Xfree στο Xorg.  Η λύση που βρήκα είναι να απανεργοποιήσω το Xkb.  Έχω
τις εξείς γραμμές στο configuration του xserver:


### Disable Xkb. It breaks the transition to console.
Section "ServerFlags"
        Option          "XkbDisable"    "true"
