        Installation note for SuSE Linux 8.0  [06/29/2002]


[INTRODUCTION]
1.1 Foreword
    This driver diskette should be used with all Promise FastTrak Series
    TX & LP cards and onboard chipsets running SuSE Linux 8.0
    Do NOT use this diskette for other versions of Linux for FastTrak
support.

1.2 Support List
    PDC20262 FastTrak66
    PDC20265R FastTrak100 Lite
    PDC20267 FastTrak100
    PDC20270 FastTrak LP/TX2/TX4
    PDC20271 FastTrak TX2000
    PDC20276 MBFastTrak133 Lite
    PDC20277 SBFastTrak133 Lite
    with
    SuSE 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18)
    SuSE 8.0SMP (kernel 2.4.18-SMP)

1.3 Linux kernel 2.4.x ATA issue on FastTrak Series
    Linux Kernels 2.4.x misidentifies PDC20262/PDC20265/PDC20270/PDC20271
    (FastTrak 66/FastTrak 100 Lite motherboard-embedded
solution/FastTrak100TX2)
    cards and/or chips as simple IDE controllers. This results in the
built-in
    Linux IDE driver trying to handle the controller and can prevent the
proper
    FastTrak ATA RAID driver to be loaded. Follow the installation
instructions
    AND the parameter commands referred to in the Notes section.

1.4 How to make the Promise Driver Diskettes
    Creating Driver Diskette
    a).In Linux:
       1. Issue the "unzip" command to extract the files "driver.zip" on to
a
          formatted diskette.
       2. Label diskette "FastTrak Driver Disk"
    b).In Windows:
       1. Use WinZIP to extract the files "driver.zip" on to a formatted
          diskette.
       2. Label diskette "FastTrak Driver Disk"


[INSTALLATION]

2.1 To install the FastTrak Series Linux Driver into an EXISTING SYSTEM:

     1) Append parameters (see Note 3.1 below) to the boot options
        when system boot.
     2) Insert Promise FastTrak Driver Diskette
        Issue command to load new driver at the # command prompt:
        # mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
 # cd /floppy
 # sh install (Answer Yes/No when inquire setup configuration)
        You can answer Yes to load FastTrak driver when linux booting
everytime.
 # cd /
 # umount /floppy
        NOTE: All IDE channels except the first and second one are disable
             for the "Linux 2.4 ATA issue". It can be enable by removing
      'ide2=0 ide3=0 ide4=0 ide5=0 ide6=0 ide7=0 ide8=0 ide9=0' in
      /etc/lilo.conf.

2.2 To install the FastTrak Series Linux Driver into a NEW SYSTEM:

     1) Start the SuSE install by booting from SuSE CD1.
     2) Choose `Manual Installation', and append parameters(see Note 3.1
below).
     3) When the `Main menu' dialog box appears, choose the third option
        `Kernel modules (hardware drivers)'.
 a. choose `Load IDE/RAID/SCSI modules'
 b. choose `More modules' at the bottom line
 c. Insert the `Promise Driver Disk' floppy
 d. choose `Load IDE/RAID/SCSI modules'
 e. choose the first option `FastTrak : FastTrak Series Driver' without
    parameter.
 f. back to main menu
     4) When the `Main menu' dialog box appears, choose the fourth option
        `Start installation / system'
 a. choose `Start installation/update'
 b. choose `CD-ROM'
     5) When the `Confirm driver activation' dialog box appears, DO NOT load
        these two Driver/Module `ataraid' and `pdcraid'.
     6) When in `Installation Settings', select `Booting' option.
        a. make sure the kernel parameters (see Note 3.1 below) have been
typed
    in `Kernel boot parameters'
        b. enable `Use the 'linear' option'
     7) Continue with the installation as normal.
     8) When the "The LILO boot sector has been written to disk..." dialog
box
         appears, press Alt-Ctrl-F2 and insert the `Promise FastTrak Disk'
in
  the floppy drive.
     9) Issue the following commands at the # prompt to setup
        the FastTrak Series Linux Driver:
        # chroot /mnt
        # mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
        # cd /floppy
        # sh setup-ft
 # cd /
 # umount /floppy
 # exit
     10) Press Alt-Ctrl-F7 and continue with the installation as normal.
     11) After installation has completed, please re-boot system without the
 Promise boot disk.
