Associates):

HACKER noun 1. A person who enjoyes learning the details of computer
systems and how to strech theris capabilities - as oposes to most users of
computers, who prefer to learn only the minimum amount necessary. 2. One
who programs enthusiastically or who enjoys programming rather than just
theorizing about programming.

kai pio idika (gia osus de variunte):

Many different kinds of people break into computer systems. SOme -perhaps
the most widely publicized - are reckless teenagers out on electronic joy
rides.
Like youths who "borrow" fast cars, tha main goal ins't necessarily to do
damage, but to have what they consider to be a good time. Sometimes these
kids make mistakes, and people in positions of authority or responsibility
- like systems administrators - have to clean up after them.

Although the media often refers to the people who break into computers as
"hackers", this is a preversion of the word's original meaning. Some
computer security proffesionals, many of them hackers or former hackers
themselves, call people who break into computers "crackers", a word that
more accurately describes whta these people do. Other terms that apply to
those people are "vandals" or "crimininals".

Sometimes a cracker breaks into a computer to capture information. For
example, in Boston several years ago, a reporter from on news organization
was caught breaking into the computer of a TV news department, looking for
tips. "Spies" from competing research groups, companies, and countries
have all brokes into the computers of their adversaries.

Crackers who break into a computer sometimes modify the computer's
operating system to make it easier to break it again. For example, the
cracker might install a program that records every user's password.

In other cases, the cracker may be interested in vandalism or destruction.
Consider the case of a formet employee who is out for revenge. The most
dangerous crackers are usually insiders (or former insiders), because
the're the most likely to know the codes and security measures that are
already in place.
