Lotus to offer Linux version of Domino server

Keeping to its promise made earlier this year, Lotus Development officials
said
this week they will deliver a Linux version of the company's Domino server by
year's send via a quarterly maintenance release.

Expected as Release 5.0.3, the Linux version of Domino will support
connections
to all of the same popular server-based industry platforms as previous
versions
of Domino, including Oracle's Oracle8.x series and IBM's other host-based
platforms such as DB2, company officials said.

Lotus is expected to post its first quarterly maintenance fix, Version
5.0.1, by
the end of this week.

Despite recently published reports, Lotus does not have any plans to port
Version 2.0 of its Same Time Instant messaging software nor Version 2.0 of its
Quick Place Web-based collaboration software over to Linux. Company officials
said that decision is still being weighed.

"We have not made any commitments or decisions to offer 2.0 versions of those
products this year. If we do port those products over, they would be later
versions," said Paul Davis, a company spokesman.

Lotus is also remaining noncommittal about porting over to Linux its
SmartSuite
set of productivity applications and its Notes client any time soon. However,
company officials would not close the door on either opportunity,
particularly a
Linux version of SmartSuite.

"We just delivered Version 9.5 of SmartSuite, so there are no immediate plans.
But a year from now I suppose it is possible. It would be rash for us to
say no
to the possibility," Davis said.

Lotus Development Corp., in Cambridge, Mass., is at www.lotus.com.
