Postgres alignment error

Hi there people,
I have been playing around with POSTGRESQL and I have noticed that when
the /a (aligned colums) option is toggled on, when I SELECT from a
table, the data is not as it should. e.g.: (the field separator has been
selected to be the default, i.e. a |)
abbrev |type
----------+---------------------
BC | arr
                | anger
etc.
When I toggle this option, and redo the selection the data comes out as
it should, but not in an aligned format. e.g.:
abbrev |type
----------+---------------------
BC|Bulk Carrier
PASS|Passanger
etc

Is there any way that I can fix this???

Thanks
