In a sudden turnabout, Oracle will indeed port its Oracle8 database to
the Linux operating system. The company earlier this month said it had
no such plans but has had a change of heart based on a recent
groundswell of support for the open-source operating system.

A formal announcement is planned for Tuesday, an Oracle representative
   said.

"In the last couple of weeks, there's been this huge groundswell for
   Linux," the representative said.

A version of Oracle8 for Linux on the Intel platform is planned for
shipment by March 1999. Support for other hardware platforms is likely
   to follow.

Oracle would follow Informix, which is also planning to announce Linux
support next week. Oracle has had its database running on Linux in its
   labs, however.

The company expects to sell a "huge volume" of its database for Linux
based on the recent growth of Linux.

"It'll just be like porting to another platform," the representative
   said.

Ciao,
  Christos
