The  file /etc/issue is an text file which contains a mes<AD>
sage or system identification to  be  printed  before  the
login  prompt.   It  may  contain  various @char and \char
sequences, if supported by getty(1).

#man motd

/etc/motd  is  an  ASCII file which contents are showed by
login(1) before it executes the login shell.
