The challenge is over...
...and we "lost". On June 17 around midnight one of our
competitors, DESCHALL, found the secret key and decrypted
the secret text prepared by RSA Data Security Inc
(http://www.rsa.com).
The goal of the DES Challenge was to show that DES encryption
could be cracked, and that better encryption is needed to keep
data safe. In my opinion this goal has been accomplished.
Although it's not that fun being a runner up, I must say that it
has been an enjoyable couple of months running this effort.
As much as it been a goal to show the weaknesses of 56bit
crypto, it's been very nice to be able to show the enormous
amount of "surplus" computing power that is available on the
Internet. Not to mention the warm and fuzzy feeling it gives me
to think of everybody that's been working together towards the
common goal of answering the challenge.
The SolNET DES Team would like to thank everybody who has
been participating and sharing their spare computing resources
in our project. Without you none of this would have been
possible.
Special thanks goes out to:
Felix Rauch who helped us get the clients to Sun and SGI
platforms.
Paul Foley and Pierce T Wetter for sharing their DES algorithms
with us in the startup phase.
Martijn Kruiswijk for spending countless hours working on the
clients.
Svend Olaf Mikkelsen who made his BrydDES library available for
inclusion into the SolNET clients.
Solar Designer and Thomas Koenig for supplying patches to the
clients.
Germano Caronni and Kevin Manderson for providing invaluable
feedback.
Also, thanks to National Chiao Tong University - Taiwan,
Centre for Earth Observation - Joint Research Centre - Italy and
AudioSports.net - West Palm Beach - Florida which have been
running keyserver for us.
I probably forgot someone, and I'm sorry if I did. There have
been many contributors and we are very grateful towards all
of them! Thanks!
Thanks also has to go to the Deschall team which have been very
decent competitors. The competition have been "friendly" in all
aspects. I guess they were just plain faster... :)
Anyway, if they hadn't found the key, we would have found it at
about 54.7% of the keyspace searched. So there still was some
work to be done... :)
We will begin removing the keyservers soon.
Keymaster.des.sollentuna.se will be left running for the time
being and the web-pages and FTP archive will still be available.
We'll look into releasing the server source, although I cannot
make any definite promises yet.
Again, many thanks to all the contributors!
As a side note, if you still feel like spending some of your
idle computer time on a fun project. Look at the Bovine RC5
cracking effort. (http://rc5.distributed.net).
Another large scale internet based effort is the Great Internet
Mersienne Prime search. More info is availalble at:
