Hi guys,
I'm writing this e-mail without preparing some of the stuff I wanted just to
short things out. We, the Hellenic Linux Users Group (of which I'm the
elected vice chairman) were more than happy to hear from Andy Fletcher the
idea to have us organise next year's LBW.
I was under the impression that we were the only ones proposing something
for LBW'07 that's why I didn't write anything sooner. To quote Andy's e-mail
on Novermber the 5th, : "At present there are no other contenders for the
LBW and I have received comment from one group that they are holding back
with their proposal to give Greece a clear run". That was one month ago but
I thought we still had more than enough time to plan things ahead and
announce them to you.
We had the chance to meet in person in Athens a couple of weeks ago with
Andy and after a brainstorming over greek cuisine we decided that the best
place to host such an event would be Crete for various reasons (that would
take some time to write which unfortunately I don't have right now but I
promise we'll do our best to prepare something before this year ends for
your consideration)
Anyway, to make a long story short: We've already have a mailing list
set up (Cc'ing them) in which we're doing the local organisers' stuff
(who's gonna call whom, which mayor to ask about rooms, what excursion
to plan etc.) That's at http://lists.hellug.gr/mailman/listinfo/lbw2007
At the time we have only 3 people working loosely on it but I expect
that to change soon.
We've also set up a vhost at:
http://lbw2007.hellug.gr/
in which we'll be installing a collaborative tool (like a wiki) with
content similar to the one previous LBW had (how to get there, what to
see, useful vocabulary etc)
Andy (who's up to his neck with his job at this time) has already offered to
help with the Greek proposal and will be visiting Athens sometime in mid-January
and we'll have the chance to coordinate even better.
I have the slight impression that we'll be in touch ;-)
Cheers everyone,
Spiros
