The most efficient way to handle mail is using rules on the mail server.
Meaning, if you have procmail, using .procmailrc to filter your mail
into different folders. I use an Exchange server, where procmail is not
available, but you can use the Outlook client (or Outlook Web Access)
to establish rules to be followed when mail is delivered. But if you
really don't have this option then this won't help you.
Another way I've handled this in the past is by moving mail out of the
inbox regardless of whether it is spam or not. This way, the inbox
stays empty, so it is efficient to have imapfilter only examining new
messages, not re-examining old messages. I move spam messages into a
spam folder, and non-spam into a folder called "Default", and I have
my IMAP mail reader configured to visit the Default folder by default,
instead of INBOX. This also means I will never see a spam message show
up briefly in my inbox, just because imapfilter hasn't yet got around to
removing it.
I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but maybe it will
open up some ideas for how to attack this problem from different
directions.
